Tips for Being a Stay at Home Mom or Dad

When we make a choice to stay at home with our children we make a choice for a challenge. For those that think it is an easy task , think again. The day to day tasks can be overwhelming. being with your children all the time can be a challenge in itself. I know I love my children with all my heart but a parent needs a break just as the kids do. Here are some tips to help you cope.

Tip# 1

Take a break. Take some time for yourself or for you and your spouse. This is a must for any stay at home parent. Not giving yourself time to have a break is ultimately punishing your children. You Will notice that after so long you tend to get short tempered or just plain aggravated. Why? Because you need a break! Sometimes mom’s and Dad’s just need a minute to breathe. Do it for you and do it for your kids. You all deserve it.

Tip # 2

Don’t wrap up in the television and don’t let the kids. Easier said than done for the kids but really it does hold true. The point of being a stay at home parent is to actually be there and spend time with your kids. Your job is to take an active role in their life. As for TV time for the kids, for their sake and yours, limit it.

Tip # 3

Learn to multi-task if you have not already done so. When you are with your kids , you should be with your kids. In the process if you can throw a load of laundry in that will help you out tremendously. I find that is hard for me not to muti-task. I even have to make myself sit still sometimes.

Tip # 4

When the kids go to bed or take a nap , use your time wisely. Use this time to do the dishes , fold the laundry prep for lunch or dinner. Don’t run yourself ragged but with out little ones under foot you can accomplish a lot in a little time.

Tip # 5

Prepare ahead of time. This is a god send for stay at home parents. If you know you have an appointment the next day prepare the night before so all you have to do is grab your things and head out the door with the kids.

These are just a few things that can help stay at home parents leverage some time. Everything comes with time and you will learn how to get those one hundred things accomplished in just one day. Baby steps, that is what it takes. Patience is a virtue and time to yourself in invaluable.
